Continuous Learning is Your Best Skill

I was born and raised in Romania. I was 4 years old when Communism failed in my country. Needless to say, my parents were brought up differently than we are.

What does this mean? Basically, they were told that you needed to get a degree or learn a craft, and then you spent your whole life doing that thing. Usually in the same job. In the state department.

This meant that they were very reluctant whenever I told them I changed my job.

But most of all, my mom would be very surprised whenever I told them I am studying something and sitting for a certification exam. She would always ask me:

“What’s the matter, Leo? Are you really gonna study all your life?”

“Yes, mom, I’ll study for the rest of my life”

I will never stop learning.

From my point of view, the moment you stop learning, you stop thinking and you stop living. In our times, change is the only constant, and continuous learning has the following benefits:

  • You can diversify your income streams
  • You keep your brain working
  • You stay relevant in your industry (and not only)

A good job doesn’t guarantee your future

In order to be prepared, you have to broaden your horizons. I am currently a Technology Director in a Big 4 company.

But, tomorrow something could happen and I would need to do something else. God forbid, hundreds of thousands of neighboring Ukrainians had to flee the country in a matter of weeks. I would assume that in situations like this you would have to compromise and diverse knowledge helps.

Sometimes, more is actually more

This is the reason why I passed an Agile certification exam 2 years ago, a Cloud one last month and that’s why I’m in the Ship30 program.

Continuous learning is no longer an option, but a necessity.
